hahaha this is brilliantly funny. And we're 1/4 on the way to the Cecil/bread pin-up calendar. That is right, Cecil/Carlos is so yesterday, I ship Cecil/bread now and it's all your fault for being so fantastic.
WTNV anime high school would be the best thing in the world! and 'Radio School' love it! how does the SSP know that isn't a coconut flower bread! (it's a real thing) that or Cecil is going for the bad boy rebel to impress Carlos XD....dame now i have the image of Cecil as a Greaser and Carlos as mr. straight laced
I just started listening to the show. There's a fun little video on PBS IdeaChannel that introduced me to what makes the show great. Instead of regurgitating what the video said, I'll just link to it here for your pleasure: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg7ktp…
uggh tho. I saw that video on tumblr and it infuriatied me, why did they choose to talk about something incredible in the most boring way possible? What the idea channel does is take something extraordinary and make it mundane, it's like explaining a joke, it completely ruins it. Also it kinda feels disrespectful to the artists? They show their artwork and they're like "that's not Cecil, not cecil, nope. you're all doing it wrong" : /
I get the anger, but what he's saying also makes sense. If for example, we are talking about a public radio show like Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, the canon depiction of Peter Segal is whatever Peter Segal looks like in real life--even though Peter Segal might look completely different in my head. Because Welcome to Night Vale only exists in a sonic medium, we can't really rely on what Cecil the character looks like because he doesn't exist. I actually saw someone post in a fandom safe-space that they really didn't want the creators of Night Vale to run contests where they'd choose certain depictions of the characters over other depictions because the really wonderful thing about the fandom is that Cecil's canon description is bland and vague. If the creators choose one person's fanart, that's like them saying "THIS is what Cecil looks like. THIS is what he will always look like." I have to agree with the person because Night Vale loses so much of what makes it unique the moment a Word from God determines character appearances. It's a lot like reading a book, and even if Idea Channel says that you can't really have a canon depiction of Cecil, who cares? That's what makes the fanart more fun for me to look at because I get to see what you the artist are thinking and feeling about the show. That's the best part of fanart.
Also...yeah. PBS Idea Channel was definitely good when it started off in the early episodes, but it's gotten a bit simplistic. I rather like some of the intellectual stuff that (and it's a good analogy) does feel like someone is explaining a joke because I end up thinking about something I never considered before. Idea Channel definitely does better when talking about "deep stuff" like mathematics and climate changes instead of a show like this. But, I have to give them credit for finally convincing me to give the show a gander. I had seen references to it all over fandom spaces and didn't really get it, figuring that I was just out of the loop and may not even like it to begin with.
I have yet to be disappointed. (Also, I started going through the rest of your fanart, and my favorite thing about all of it is that since the show is fresh in my head, I can hear Cecil saying all of your written dialogue)
I totally agree with what you said about not having a canon image of the characters because really, half the fun is imagining what they look like, looking at other people's depictions and theorizing about the things that they hint at. What bothered me was the wording in the video, that guy just comes off really pretentious.
Commonplace books actually had a t shirt contest and it really angered me that they picked one design that fully shows the characters faces like, it's fucking official merchandise! People are going to think that that's actually what cecil and carlos look like when really it's just one person's headcannon. What are we doing, gentlemen? Let's keep things vague
I'm glad that I and the original poster aren't the only way. It'd be not that different from Tolkien picking out someone's art and saying, "This is what Frodo looks like." A lot of people have the movies go off of, but there's still a distinction between the movie canon and book canon.
Now that I've seen the submissions, I'm hoping the silhouette design wins the contest since that would probably strike that best balance possible between depicting the characters but still saying "Cecil and Carlos look however you want them to look." It looks like they have it down to five finalists and they're letting the fans vote.
Also, barely related. As far as Cecil depictions go, I like the third eye one that he gets in some fanart (such as yours!) Otherworldly and creepy but relatively harmless.
LOL <3. I love you. I adore you so much. Your Cecil is perfect in personality and expression and his appearance is believable too and this is just fucking hilarious please take my soul and do something beautiful with it because I know that you are, if no one else is, capable.
